FIRE DEPARTMENT
Valmeyer had several serious fires during its early history, but it was the fire that destroyed Roland Roach’s IGA grocery store in 1938 that spurred Village officials to the formation of a Fire Department. Equipment was purchased, and to cover the financial obligations of the Department, officials started the Valmeyer Fireman’s Homecoming. The first Homecoming was held in 1939 as a way to raise funds for the purchase and upkeep of the fire fighting equipment. At that time the Fire Department equipment was housed in the stone Village utility building.
At an election in December, 1955, the establishment of the Valmeyer Fire Protection District was authorized. A bond issue was approved which authorized the purchase of new equipment and the construction of a new fire house on Frederick Street.
During the flood fight in 1993, the Valmeyer Fire House was used as the base of operations for the emergency and sandbagging efforts. As a part of the Village relocation, a new Fire House was built on the new town site, and that is now home to the Valmeyer Fire Protection District. In addition to providing fire protection for the Village residents, the District also serves a large rural area.
An energetic group of individuals currently serve as volunteer fire fighters for the District. A First Responders Unit is also currently manned by members of the VFPD. This Unit is dispatched to accident scenes to stabilize accident and trauma victims before the arrival of the ambulance.
If you are interested in being a fire fighter for the VFPD, please contact Fire Chief Floyd Floarke at 935-2178.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, PLEASE CALL 9-1-1. FIREFIGHTERS WILL THEN BE DISPATCHED TO THE FIRE OR ACCIDENT SCENE.
